Let's talk about bicycle brake pads and different pad materials
00:11.5
00:15.5
When bying new brake pads you may be in trouble with finding-
00:15.7
00:20.9
-the right model, and also selecting the right friction material
00:21.0
00:23.5
Today we are talking about these different materials-
00:23.6
00:25.9
and let's concentrate on those two main categories:-
00:26.0
00:30.8
-so called organic (resin) and sintered (metal) pads
00:30.9
00:35.7
Now we focus on the friction material, the back plate is always metallic
00:36.8
00:39.9
Terms organic/sintered pads refer to the friction material
00:40.0
00:43.0
When talking about history-
00:43.2
00:47.7
-bicycle brake pads were originally made from the same-
00:47.9
00:50.8
-material as car and motorcycle brake pads-
00:50.9
00:53.9
-and they are these so called metallic pads
00:54.0
00:57.1
Metal pad friction material is not actually metal, it contains some-
00:57.2
01:01.7
-metallic particles and is made by some sintering process-
01:01.8
01:05.3
-which leads to the other term: sintered pads
01:07.0
01:11.4
SRAM calls them as sintered pads and Shimano as metal pads while-
01:11.5
01:14.6
-naming within other brands varies a lot
01:14.7
01:19.8
With this background it's very clear that metal pads are very durable-
01:19.9
01:23.0
-they can stand very high temperatures
01:23.1
01:27.0
Once we used an LPG torch for burning brake fluid residue away-
01:27.1
01:31.1
-from an American car brake shoes without any harm to shoe material
01:31.2
01:36.0
Metal pads have very high maximal braking power-
01:37.1
01:42.2
-cars with even oldschool drum brakes will stop easily
01:44.0
01:47.5
Very hard friction material has its own disadvantages
01:47.6
01:52.4
New metal pads will take some time before they seat correctly-
01:52.5
01:58.0
-to the brake disc and start to perform optimally-
01:58.6
02:02.9
-running-in time is longer and-
02:03.0
02:07.0
-they can even wear the brake disc during running-in
02:07.1
02:11.0
Nowadays normal car service often includes also new brake discs-
02:11.1
02:14.0
-just because of this reason
02:14.1
02:18.9
One disadvantage, or feature, with metal pads-
02:19.0
02:23.8
-is the on/off style braking feel
02:23.9
02:28.7
To find the right braking power and braking style-
02:28.8
02:33.0
-will need at least some adaptation
02:33.1
02:37.1
Typical disadvantage is also the squeaking-
02:37.2
02:41.2
-which is stronger with metal pads
02:41.3
02:44.8
I have here pads of my own bicycles, they all belong-
02:44.9
02:47.9
-to the resin pads category
02:48.0
02:52.8
Shimano calls them resin pads, SRAM uses term organic pads-
02:52.9
02:55.6
-while naming within other manufacturers varies also a lot
02:58.3
03:02.1
Friction material contains mainly organic fibres-
03:02.2
03:05.6
-casted together in some resin
03:07.0
03:13.0
Resin pad advantages are mainly opposite of metal pad disadvantages
03:14.0
03:18.0
The friction material is soft, running-in time is shorter-
03:18.1
03:22.4
-maximal braking power can be achieved faster-
03:22.5
03:25.9
-but the absolute maximal braking power is less-
03:26.0
03:27.7
-compared to metal pads
03:27.8
03:30.4
If you prefer maximal braking power-
03:30.5
03:33.0
-then the resin pads is not your choice-
03:33.1
03:36.9
-especially in wet conditions the braking performance will be lower-
03:37.0
03:41.2
-as well as overheating will reduce the braking power-
03:41.3
03:43.9
-other than metal pads
03:45.6
03:50.1
In fact the metal pads need some warming before they will perform well-
03:50.2
03:54.2
-and basically the warmer the better performance
03:54.3
03:57.1
But, resin pads will hate heat...
03:57.2
04:00.8
With resin pads you will find easier the braking feel-
04:00.9
04:04.7
-braking will be more logical compared to brake handle pressure
