This episode of Musical Hell is brought to you by Midnight Musicals. Welcome to the podcast musical underground. Thank you.
00:08.2
00:11.7
Hi, I'm Diva from Musical Hell, and I know the score.
00:11.8
00:35.0
["O Fortuna" by Cast in Bronze]
00:35.1
00:40.7
Having finally gotten around to watching Rocketman, the 2019 Elton John bio-musical,
00:40.8
00:42.6
I have come to two conclusions:
00:42.7
00:46.3
The first is that this is a rather good movie and I enjoyed it.
00:46.3
00:52.0
The second is that's very odd because on the surface, this doesn't look like a movie I'd enjoy.
00:52.1
00:55.8
It's a jukebox musical where the connection between the songs and the storyline
00:55.9
00:59.6
ranges from dramatically appropriate to tenuous at best.
00:59.7
01:04.0
The plot follows the same beats you've likely seen in dozens of other biopics,
01:04.1
01:08.2
or even the parody Walk Hard, down to the questionable age makeup.
01:08.7
01:12.4
And yet, it works! It really does!
01:12.5
01:17.3
So, let's take a moment to look at Rocketman to see how it takes the basics of the formula
01:17.4
01:20.4
and transforms them into something out of the ordinary.
01:20.5
01:25.1
Rocketman has something which we might call the Moulin Rouge effect.
01:25.2
01:29.4
Just as Moulin Rouge managed to make a cliché melodromatic story work
01:29.5
01:32.6
through the courage of its convictions and a definite sense of style,
01:32.7
01:36.8
so Rocketman leans into the formula it's presenting and embraces it.
01:36.9
01:41.2
Rather than attempting to subvert the traditional biopic tropes, it plays them up.
01:41.3
01:47.5
The moment where young Elton is first given the lyrics of Bernie Taupin is treated with portentious reverence.
01:47.6
01:57.4
[MUSIC]
01:57.5
02:02.8
At the same time, Dexter Fletcher also knows when to dial it back and play things straight.
02:02.9
02:07.8
The scene depicting the creation of "Your Song" is simply yet effectively staged,
02:07.9
02:12.2
with the tune emerging gradually to the increasing wonder of the listeners.
02:12.3
02:19.8
ELTON JOHN [singing]: So excuse me forgetting, but these things I do
02:19.9
02:26.7
You see, I've forgotten if they're green or they're blue.
02:26.7
02:30.5
DIVA: In general, whether they're clear reflections of the character's mental state,
02:30.6
02:32.5
or glorified background music,
02:32.6
02:35.7
the songs are filmed and choreographed very well.
02:35.8
02:39.9
Elton John's adolescence is covered to the tune of "Saturday Night's Alright"
02:40.0
02:42.3
and filmed in impressive long takes.
02:42.4
02:52.3
ELTON JOHN [singing]: Saturday night's alright, alright, alright, ooo
02:52.4
02:55.5
DIVA: And the title song is a captivating sequence
02:55.6
02:59.2
transitioning from a suicide-attempt-induced underwater hallucination
02:59.3
03:01.8
to a triumphant concert at Dodgers Stadium,
03:01.9
03:05.2
highlighting the disparity between John's unstable personal life
03:05.3
03:07.4
and his grandiose stage persona.
03:07.5
03:11.5
ELTON JOHN [singing]: And I think it's gonna be a long, long time
03:11.6
03:14.7
'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find
03:14.8
03:19.5
DIVA: Indeed, many of the songs are montages and highlight what John's producer
03:19.6
03:24.8
and toxic lover, John Reed, describes as the defining moments in a musician's life.
03:24.8
03:28.8
They also give the traditional story beats a bit of extra flair.
03:28.9
03:33.0
A montage highlighting the decadence that comes with stardom is pretty rote,
03:33.1
03:36.1
but when you turn it into a shopping spree slash production number
03:36.2
03:39.1
set to "Honky Cat," then you've got something.
03:39.2
03:42.0
ELTON JOHN [singing]: They said, get back, honky cat
03:42.1
03:45.0
Better get back to the woods
03:45.1
03:48.6
DIVA: Also, turns out Robb Stark can sing. Who knew?
03:49.0
03:51.7
In fact, the cast is solid across the board.
03:51.8
03:54.8
Taron Egerton is fantastic as Elton John,
03:54.9
03:58.5
both increasingly unbalanced and increasingly vulnerable.
03:58.6
04:02.8
Jamie Bell plays Bernie Taupin, and the two have great chemistry together.
04:02.9
04:06.9
In a movie that's in part about Elton's search for love and acceptance,
04:07.0
04:11.0
the John/Taupin bromance is the most compelling relationship in the movie.
04:11.1
04:15.1
No wonder so many of their interactions are filmed like love scenes.
04:15.2
04:19.5
ELTON JOHN [singing]: Back to the howling old owl in the woods
04:19.6
04:24.7
Hunting the horny black toad
04:24.8
04:26.2
DIVA: So, you have a good cast,
04:26.3
04:29.7
a sense of style borne out in interesting musical sequences,
04:29.8
04:33.0
and most importantly, a willingness to commit to its vision.
04:33.1
04:37.8
Put it all together and you have something that is more than the sum of its parts.
04:37.9
04:42.0
I'm Diva, I know the score, and now, so do you.
04:42.0
04:50.6
ELTON JOHN [singing]: Rocketman, Rocketman, Burning out his fuse up here alone
04:50.7
05:14.0
["O Fortuna" by Cast in Bronze]
