Hello there, i'm MtPain27 and this is Dean of Doom,
00:03.0
00:06.5
the show we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom WADs.
00:06.6
00:08.5
Why? Because ranking things is fun!
00:08.6
00:11.5
Today's episode will be dedicated to Thy Flesh Consumed,
00:11.6
00:16.5
a 4th nine-level episode for Doom which was released in stores with the Ultimate Doom in 1995.
00:16.6
00:21.3
This is the final set of classic Doom levels that id Software ever worked on with old-hands John Romero,
00:21.4
00:24.1
American McGee and Sean Green each contributing two maps,
00:24.2
00:29.7
rounded out with submissions form Tim Willits who went on to work for id and John Anderson a.k.a Dr. Sleep.
00:29.8
00:32.5
This episode was shoehorned in as a prequel to Doom II,
00:32.6
00:37.2
even by id standarts the story element of this one is very lasy and can be thought of as a sort of DLC,
00:37.3
00:40.2
except back then it came for free if you bought the original game.
00:40.3
00:42.7
Hope The Ancient Gods - Part One is worth it, folks...
00:42.8
00:47.3
Anyway, i wanted to knock this one out because it's the last big classic Doom release that I haven't covered on this channel,
00:47.4
00:50.3
and seeing as i don't have the willpower to cover the Master Levels at the moment,
00:50.4
00:54.9
it'll probably be the last commercial Doom release i cover for quite some time. Let's get to it!
00:55.0
00:56.7
Before we dive in, here's how the show works:
00:56.8
01:00.5
we'll give each level on the WAD two grades - one for quality and one for difficulty.
01:00.6
01:07.0
We grade from A to F and difficulty from X to E - X for Extreme, E for Easy and A through D in between.
01:07.1
01:12.0
A "Grade A" level is fun, memorable, visually distinctive, creative and a fair challenge.
01:12.1
01:16.5
Lower grades indicate the level lacks some or all of these qualities.
01:16.6
01:20.5
Bear in mind that I'm just an average Doom player and these review reflect only my opinions,
01:20.6
01:23.8
so our definitions of difficulty and great map design will surely differ.
01:23.9
01:25.9
Disagreeing is part of the fun, after all.
01:26.0
01:29.0
At the end of the day this show is really about spreading the joy of doom, so let's do so.
01:30.0
01:32.0
For those new to the show, here are the rules:
01:32.1
01:33.9
One: we play on Ultra-Violence.
01:34.0
01:35.9
Two: we play each level from a pistol-start.
01:36.0
01:39.1
Three: in order to review the WAD, i must have played it at least twice.
01:39.2
01:41.4
Four: saves are allowed, but discouraged.
01:41.5
01:46.1
And five: i go for 100% kills in all levels, making exceptions in cases where it's not just worth it.
01:46.2
01:50.9
I play on ZDoom with compatibility settings on strict. Now, to the WAD.
01:51.0
01:52.7
E4M1: Hell Beneath.
01:52.8
01:56.8
It's illegal in my state to write a review about Hell Beneath without including the following disclaimer:
01:59.0
02:04.6
This map only has 9 health bonuses and no power-ups or recovery items except for one green armor.
02:04.7
02:06.7
Okay, now that's done...
02:06.8
02:09.2
Hell Beneath is more survival-horror than "rip and tear".
02:09.3
02:15.4
It's another example of American McGee's minimalist style: his map is about as spasious as a box of saltine crackers and covered in slime,
02:15.5
02:17.9
which you'll have to take a dip in to get this rocket launcher.
02:18.0
02:20.4
It's functionally impossible to kill everything in the level without it.
02:20.5
02:25.5
Shotgunners have never seen more threatening - every time you get clipped by one, you can kiss that health goodbye for good.
02:25.6
02:30.3
The teleporter traps at the beginning and in the red key building are almost guaranteed to chip away at your health,
02:30.4
02:34.5
And this map's five barons will gulp down the majority of your ammo including all your rockets.
02:34.6
02:37.8
McGee springs four of them at once on you when you activate this torch secret,
02:37.9
02:40.0
which famously displays the Nine Inch Nails logo.
02:40.1
02:43.0
I didn't get any footage of it because i was too busy running away like a bit~
02:43.1
02:45.1
Hell Beneath is an easy map to hate, but you know what?
02:45.2
02:47.9
I admire it, because it plays as evil as it feels.
02:48.0
02:49.5
That's what Doom is all about, isn't it?
02:52.3
02:54.3
E4M2: Perfect Hatred.
02:54.4
02:58.5
The story goes that John Romero started working on this map at midnight and finished it 6 A.M.
02:58.6
03:03.3
But frankly i find that a little hard to believe because Perfect Hatred is about as good a map as Romero ever made,
03:03.4
03:04.9
at least from a gameplay perspective.
03:05.0
03:20.4
It's very intense
