Our legislators are back in session. Hear about our priorities, next.
00:04.3
00:08.6
00:08.7
00:13.0
Recently, our Board passed Legislative Priorities organized in four broad categories:
00:13.0
00:19.2
school funding and finance, local control and unfunded mandates, assessment and accountability, and anti-vouchers.
00:19.2
00:24.8
Some of the highlights include advocating for a school finance system that is equitable and adequate.
00:24.8
00:28.8
Our current system was described by the Texas Supreme Court as Byzantine...
00:28.8
00:32.6
...and stated that there were “shortfalls in resources and performance."
00:32.6
00:37.6
They went on to say that a “large number of students are in danger of falling further behind."
00:37.6
00:46.6
In Klein ISD, we believe our students deserve more than an archaic, complicated and under-funded system for financing their education,
00:46.6
00:52.5
and we call on the legislature to dramatically improve the system for the 5.1 million Texas school students.
00:52.5
01:00.4
We also oppose unfunded mandates like Senate Bill 507 requiring districts to place video cameras in classrooms upon request.
01:00.4
01:07.0
This unfunded mandate could cost Klein ISD in excess of $1.3 million.
01:07.0
01:15.0
We believe in accountability, but strongly oppose the A-F accountability system because it is not an accurate representation of school performance.
01:15.0
01:21.4
We advocate for a comprehensive state accountability system that is based on multiple measures of student achievement and success...
01:21.4
01:29.0
...and one that adds value for students and staff, as well as locally defined criteria in areas deemed important to the community.
01:29.0
01:38.8
Finally, we strongly oppose vouchers by any name because such programs advocate for using public tax dollars for private education with no accountability.
01:38.8
01:46.6
The state already has mandated mechanisms in place to allow students in certain schools an option to attend another school with provided transportation.
01:46.6
01:51.5
Why is there a push to help students move from schools to private schools with no accountability?
01:51.5
01:52.8
Something to think about.
01:52.8
01:54.8
Ah, the legislative session!
